STEVEN GERRARD has been given a huge vote of confidence by a former key man at Ibrox, should he complete a stunning return to Rangers.
The Liverpool legend took over at Gers in 2018 and eventually broke Celtic’s stranglehold on the Premiership, winning the title in 2021 before departing for Aston Villa the following season.
With Rangers about to come under new ownership in the form of 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, debate over who should lead the team on the field has been rife.
Current interim boss Barry Ferguson looks unlikely to be handed the role permanently despite impressive showings in the Europa League and a priceless win over Old Firm rivals Celtic on their patch.
Under Ferguson, the Light Blues have remained inconsistent and the man himself has said he’s prepared for the eventuality that someone else will come in to take the club forward.
Former defender Russell Martin has been linked with the job but Gerrard is a more eye-catching name who has also been at the top of some bookies’ lists.

And someone who played alongside Martin and under Gerrard at Ibrox has thrown his weight behind the latter.
Ryan Jack insists that Gerrard has the passion and winning mentality Gers need right now and that, crucially, he understands the club having been there before.
Jack also explained that Gerrard is up there with the BEST leaders he’s ever worked with in his career.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Jack said: “For me, if it’s about being able to handle all of that? He’s a leader, probably the best I’ve ever had in my career.
“So yeah, he’d be a great option for the club to look at.
“I’m sure there will be other candidates but it’s about making sure they get the right one, who can come in and lift the whole place.”
Gerrard, 44, is currently out of work after leaving Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq.
But ex-Scotland midfielder Jack, 33, who is now plying his trade in Turkey with Esenler Erokspor, suggested that Gerrard can give Ibrox a much-needed lift once again if he comes back.
He said: “When Gerrard was appointed the first time and was at the stadium, I remember seeing the pictures on TV.
“Immediately, he had that interaction with the fans. Right away, he had that passion.
“For us as players, when we saw that we thought: ‘Here we go, he knows what this is all about’.”
