By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Orange Walk football champions, Yo Creek United FC, have firmly rejected the Orange Walk Football Association’s (OWFA) ruling that suspended three of its players over allegations of racism during a semifinal match against Mi Gente FC last Sunday at the Louisiana Football Field. Calling the decision unjust, the club has vowed to contest the sanctions, which they believe are based on unfounded accusations without concrete evidence.

The club issued a strong statement condemning the disciplinary measures, emphasizing their commitment to sportsmanship while criticizing the handling of the incident.
“The management and players of Yo Creek United FC would like to categorically refute any and all accusations of racism being levied against its players,” Yo Creek United FC said.
“Our club, which is one of the most disciplined in the OWFA, wholeheartedly stands against any form of discriminatory or racist behavior and does not tolerate such behavior within our organization.
“We are however dismayed by the harsh and unfounded sanctions imposed on our players when no concrete evidence proving the veracity of the allegations has been produced. We are appalled by the lack of due process afforded these players when they have been deemed guilty even before a proper investigation into the incident has been carried out.”
The club maintains that its players have been wrongfully accused, arguing that the association’s decision tarnishes their reputation without clear proof. They have vowed to challenge the ruling and push for a fair process.
“We are Champions, and we always hold our heads up high!” the statement concluded.
The sanctions were issued after OWFA officials received reports that three Yo Creek United players allegedly directed racist taunts at a Mi Gente player during the match. The incident led Mi Gente players to refuse to continue playing, resulting in the abandonment of the match in the 83rd minute.
On Monday, the OWFA released a statement reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy toward racism in football. The association emphasized that discriminatory behavior—whether on the field or in the stands—would not be tolerated, warning that future violations could result in even harsher penalties, including lifetime bans.
OWFA officials also pointed out that racist remarks from spectators contributed to the match’s premature end, prompting multiple public announcements condemning such behavior. Ultimately, according to the OWFA, the match was abandoned when the taunts persisted despite warnings.
This controversy is expected to fuel discussions on racism in Belizean football.
