A Denver Police Department officer arrested on suspicion of assault had a history of domestic violence going back years, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit.
Brandon Douglas Greulich, 33, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of misdemeanor assault, false imprisonment, harassment and child abuse.
Greulich, a patrol officer, joined the Denver Police Department in 2022, according to a news release from the agency.
“Due to the offenses being misdemeanors, Greulich was placed in an off-line assignment and will remain in that role while the case makes its way through the judicial process,” agency officials said in the release.
Greulich got into a fight with a woman in February after the woman asked him about travel plans and he began yelling at her about controlling him, detectives wrote in an arrest affidavit.
He then shoved her against the wall, pinned her with his body and pressed his forearm against her neck so she struggled to breathe.
There was also a child in the apartment during the incident, according to the affidavit.
The woman told detectives Greulich had abused her for years and instructed her to cover up her injuries, but she was afraid to report the incidents because Greulich was a police officer.
During one incident, the woman locked herself in the bathroom and heard Greulich racking a gun in the next room.
The Denver Police Department will conduct its own internal review of the incident once the Douglas County criminal case concludes, agency officials said. That review will include the Denver Department of Safety and the Office of the Independent Monitor, a civilian oversight agency.
An attorney for Greulich could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday night. He was released from jail on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon for a disposition hearing, court records show.
