By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Napoles have a mountain to climb in the Premier Women’s League of Belize Finals, but they’re placing their faith in captain Roshanny Narváez and Jinnelle Pott to turn their underdog dream into reality as they take on Sagitun GIRLZ in the first leg this Sunday, May 25, at 5:00 pm at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
Narváez has been Napoles’ heartbeat, stepping up when it matters most. She scored a vital goal in their April 27 battle against Sagitun, pulling one back just before halftime, shifting momentum in Napoles’ favour. Her ability to rally her teammates and find the net will be crucial as they attempt to stun the undefeated top ranked Sagi GIRLZ.
Pott, another key figure, has proven her scoring instincts throughout the season, particularly in the semifinals. Alongside Narváez, she will be expected to apply pressure in the attacking third and capitalize on any lapses in Sagitun’s defense.
Napoles will also need a high-powered game from Stephenie Barrientos, who has been nursing an injury, along with Belcie Montoya. The Belmopan side will also be counting on Heidy Lopez and Carlene Tillett to keep the pressure on the southern club.
Despite their underdog status, Napoles have already shown they can take down giants, having eliminated defending champions Jewel Fury in a dramatic semifinal series. If Narváez, Pott, and their supporting cast rise to the occasion, they might just pull off the biggest upset of the season. But that’s not going to be easy as the Sagitun GIRLZ head into the Finals without any injuries.
Following Sunday’s match, the return leg—the definitive final—will take place on Saturday, May 31, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, where the Premier Women’s League champion will be crowned.
