After the successful debut of the Derek Larner Memorial Run in January this year, the second edition of the event honouring the track-and-field coach’s legacy is set for Sunday, 26 Oct.
There were over 600 participants and $16,000 raised for local charities at the inaugural event.
Larner, who passed away from stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2021, was a passionate athlete, coach and mentor in the local running community. He was also the founder of 345 Athletics Club (now Vision Academy 345) and Race Caribbean.
Laura Larner, Derek’s wife, presented the donation cheques of $8,000 each that were raised from the first run to Jasmine Palliative and Hospice Care and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society on 13 May.

Both organisations are close to the family’s heart and, with the return of the memorial race, they will continue their efforts to raise funds for the same two charities.
In a recent press release, Laura Larner said the great turnout in January meant the world to her and Derek’s children, noting, “It was emotional, but so uplifting. We’re already looking forward to coming together again this October.”
Derek Larner’s belief in living life to the fullest through running, community and connection is a driving force behind this run. “We want to carry that forward, promote active lifestyles, and make sure no one faces cancer alone,” Laura Larner said.
Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the October event. The categories of the run are 5K, 10K, half marathon and half-marathon relay.
