By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Over-55 Men’s Basketball Team has etched its name in history, defeating Brazil A 80–70 in the final of the 2025 FIMBA MaxiBasketball World Championship in Ticino, Switzerland. The triumph, held in the scenic region of Ticino, Switzerland, marks Belize’s second consecutive gold medal in this international tournament, organized by the International Maxibasketball Federation (FIMBA, which features men’s and women’s championships in different age categories.
In 2023, the Belize Maxibasketball team won the subchampionship at the 16th FIMBA Maxibasketball World Championships in Mar de Plata, Argentina.
🏆 Road to Glory
Team Belize’s championship run was nothing short of dominant:
- July 2: Defeated Italy 64–51 in the 8th Round
- July 3: Overpowered Mexico 65–47 in the Quarterfinals
- July 5: Eliminated Puerto Rico 75–56 in the Semifinals
- July 6: Clinched the title with an 80–70 win over Brazil A in the Final
In the other semifinal, Brazil A had beaten Germany A 71–56, while Germany A later secured third place by defeating Puerto Rico 74–65.
The final against Brazil A was a high-intensity clash, but Belize’s composure and experience proved decisive in the closing minutes.

The 2025 edition of the FIMBA World Championship featured over 400 teams from 60 countries, making it the largest Maxibasketball tournament in history.
