Summer fun is in full swing on Cayman Brac, with a variety of sports camps keeping children active throughout July and August.
The island’s athletic calendar kicked off with a basketball camp held from 8-11 July at the Layman E. Scott Sr. High School basketball court, where over 25 children participated.
The action continued on 14-18 July at the Cayman Brac Sports Complex for the highly anticipated summer football camp.
Welcoming children aged 6-16, the camp offered a fantastic opportunity for skill development and friendly competition.
Lenworth Duhaney, sports instructor for the Sister Islands Sports Unit, shared his enthusiasm for the camp’s success.
“Our camp was very successful,” Duhaney told the Compass, noting a significant increase in participation this year – including a strong showing of female participants – with numbers fluctuating between 37 and 51 children daily.
The camp was structured with both junior and senior sections, catering to various skill levels.
Duhaney explained that the majority of campers were already involved in the yearly football program, which streamlined the coaching process, though new faces were also present.
“Performance-wise, they performed very well,” he proudly reported, detailing how participants were taught essential techniques such as positioning, defensive systems, and formations.
As the football cleats are put away, the focus shifts to the water with the swimming camp running from 21-25 July.
This camp, held from 8:30am to 12pm at the 15-metre community pool – adjacent to the Layman E. Scott Sr. High School – requires participants to be able to swim 25 meters unassisted.
Following that, cricket enthusiasts will have their chance to shine from 28 July to 1 Aug. at the Cayman Brac Sports Complex.
This camp, also running from 8:30am to 12pm, invites children aged 7-16 to learn the fundamentals of the sport.
The summer camp series will then conclude with the junior lifeguard camp, scheduled from 4-8 Aug.
Taking place at the 25-meter short course pool from 8:30am to 12pm, this camp is designed to equip participants with essential water safety and rescue skills.
To join, individuals must be able to swim 25 meters unassisted and tread water for 60 seconds.
