While the Owls are yet to confirm Rohl’s departure, The Athletic report staff and players were informed of the decision by the manager this morning.
Rohl has been allowed to leave for free and will be able to pursue other opportunities immediately.
However, the former Southampton and Bayern Munich assistant does not have a new job lined up yet.
And it is expected he will take time to consider his next steps in management.
Rohl first took charge in October 2023, becoming the youngest manager in the EFL at the time in what was his first taste of management.
The German secured survival in the second tier for Wednesday before going on to finish 12th in his first and only full season at the club in the 2024/25 campaign.
Overall, he managed 89 games for the Hillsborough Stadium outfit, winning 34, drawing 21 and losing 34.
He originally did not turn up for pre-season training earlier this summer due to the ongoing problems the club is facing, before eventually returning to work with a threadbare squad.

SunSport exclusively revealed how much-maligned Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri was refusing to sell the club for less than £100million.
This is despite the club’s crippling debt issues which saw payments to players in May and June.
Earlier this month, SunSport reported that Chansiri owes more than £4million in football debts — which will have to be paid by whoever buys the club.
The extent of the cash woes emerged during takeover bids by several groups in the prior weeks.
Earlier this month US businessman Tilman Fertitta was linked with the crisis club.
Fertitta, 68, is the US ambassador for Italy and is an ally of Donald Trump.
The American also owns the Houston Rockets in the NBA.
