A 5-member team leaves Grenada on Friday, 15 August, to attend the FIDE World Under 16 Chess Olympiad 2025 in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The Olympiad runs from 16–23 August 2025. It is the second time ever that Grenada is fielding a team to a Junior Chess Olympiad. In September 2024, Grenada fielded 10 players (5 males/5 females) at the FIDE 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.
In 2020, Grenada became a member of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The team representing Grenada at the Colombia Olympiad comprises Jada Gill of St Joseph’s Convent (St George); Aiden Victor of Presentation Brothers College; Jaedyn Pierre of Grenada Boys Secondary School, and Rommel Ventour of Island Montessori School. Gennard Roberts serves as the Captain/Coach of the team. The team was selected after the playoffs held last June, with the 4 players emerging at the top of the list, the youngest being 9-year-old Ventour.
All 4 players represented Grenada in the friendly bilateral invitational chess tournament with St Vincent in March this year. Gill and Ventour also represented Grenada at the Aruba Open Chess Championships in October 2024. The Colombia Junior Olympiad represents the highest-level tournament for all 4 players. Captain/Coach Roberts was a member of the historic Grenada team attending the Budapest Olympiad in September 2024.
