The nation’s leading junior cyclist, Denver Alphonse Jr, will be clashing with the best in the rest of the region this weekend in Barbados at the Caribbean Junior Road Cycling Championships. As many as 72 riders from 18 territories will compete for eight titles over two days on the Graeme Hall Course in Christ Church.
Last year in Saint Martin, Alphonse Jr placed 16th out of 25 riders, but after a recent training stint in Quebec, he told St Lucia Times he is in great shape and raring to go.
“This time around, after my experience in Canada, there will be a better outcome,” declared the 18-year-old Ciceron Secondary School alumnus. “I’m ready!”
The 19th Caribbean Junior Championships represent the region’s biggest cycling showdown, and Alphonse Jr will face the brightest young stars from the host territory, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
The road race will cover a 91-kilometre circuit, and the Saturday individual time trial will cover 23km. This will be the Saint Lucian champion’s sixth race of the year. His best finish was 13th at the Mémorial Labéjof et Denise in Martinique last March.
Accompanied by his father, Denver Sr, who will also act in the capacity of team manager, along with coach Chester Ford, Alphonse Jr leaves the island on Thursday to begin familiarising himself with the course, which will be between the Garfield Sobers Roundabout and the Edwy Talma Roundabout on Kendal Hill.
