The sports commission consists of 11 new appointees selected for their diverse expertise across various sports disciplines, as well as the public and private sectors.
The newly appointed members of the sports commission are Darrel Rankine, chairperson, Robert Lewis, Heather Harvey, Michael Holding, Verley Campbell, Barry Bodden, Dominic Ross, Daniel Tathum, Eric Greene, Elroy Bryan and Melissa Whorms.
“Their diverse backgrounds and expertise spans sports programmes, associations and athlete development,” stated a Ministry of Youth and Sports press release.
An official onboarding meeting was held on 20 Aug. where Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage Isaac Rankine, along with his chief officer Teresa Echenique, formally welcomed the newly appointed members.
The meeting also included members of the new National Youth Commission, whose appointments were announced along with those of the sports commission.
At the meeting, the roles of the new commissions in shaping the future of youth development and sports in the Cayman Islands were highlighted, the release stated.
Minister Rankine underscored the significance of the appointments, saying, “Youth development and sports are not side issues, they are national priorities. These Commissions will play a crucial role in advising policy, supporting innovation, and ensuring that our strategies reflect the needs and potential of our people.”
The release added, “Both commissions will offer guidance on important matters, including strategic investments in youth and sports programs, and will champion inclusive, community-led policymaking to ensure all programs have the chance to succeed.”
