Antigua and Barbuda’s boxing contingent made their mark at the Battle of the Islands event held on Saturday, August 30th in St. Maarten, with two fighters representing the twin-island nation in contrasting outcomes.
The evening began on a high note for the visiting team as Zalaan Jan dominated his cruiserweight bout in spectacular fashion. Fighting in the 83kg division, Jan faced off against St. Kitts’ Alexon Pemberton and wasted little time in making his statement. The Antiguan boxer overwhelmed his opponent with a blistering display of power and precision, securing a technical knockout victory in the opening round.
The main event of the evening featured a more challenging contest for Antigua’s second representative. Leon Laudat, competing in the 71kg middleweight division, stepped into the ring against the highly experienced Samir Arnell, a 73kg middleweight who fights out of Europe but was representing St. Maarten for the bout.
Despite a valiant effort, Laudat found himself up against a seasoned campaigner whose European fighting experience proved decisive. The contest went the full distance, with Arnell’s superior ring craft and tactical awareness ultimately earning him a points victory over the determined Antiguan fighter.
The Battle of the Islands event showcased the growing boxing talent across the Caribbean region, with fighters from various islands competing in what has become an anticipated annual gathering.
