By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Premier Basketball League’s Toucan Cup Finals tip off this Friday, September 5, at the Belize City Civic Center, where the San Pedro Tiger Sharks host the EZ Investments Griga Dream Ballers in Game 1 of a best-of-three series. Tipoff is set for 9:00 pm, with both teams battling for a spot in the BPBL Jaguars Cup Final.
The winner of this series will advance to face the Mayan Conference champion, where the Western Ballaz and the Belize City Thunderbolts are set to clash in their own finals. Together, the two conference winners will meet in the national championship series beginning September 26.
Game 2 of the Toucan Cup Finals shifts to the Russell ‘Chiste’ Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga on Friday, September 12, at 9:00 pm, where the Dream Ballers will look to defend home court. If the series is tied, Game 3 returns to Belize City on Sunday, September 14, again at 4:00 pm, for a decisive showdown.
San Pedro enters with a legacy of titles and a roster built for big moments. Francis Arana, the team’s floor general, orchestrates the offense with precision, while Brian White, the team’s top rebounder, anchors the paint. The Tiger Sharks are known for their playoff poise and perimeter firepower.
Griga arrives battle-tested. After a decisive Game 3 win over the PG Panthers, the Dream Ballers punched their ticket to the finals behind a defensive masterclass. Deshawn Brackett led the scoring effort, while Kevin Lourie, the BPBL Defensive Player of the Year, dominated the boards and protected the rim. Griga’s depth and physicality have become their calling card.
