CELTIC hero Chris Sutton has waded into the war of words between the club and its supporters.
A 1,030-word statement was released last night, attempting to ease concerns over poor transfer business.
Part of the statement read: “Achieving success on the field of play underpins everything we do.
“The club’s strategy over many years has been dedicated to that objective, and we will always strive to achieve it.
“Celtic supporters play an integral part in the success of the club, and we are committed to delivering success for them.”
But the statement has done little to appease fans, with supporter’s group the Green Brigade issuing a quick response.
They said: “Irrespective of the condescending and insulting content of this statement, 350+ Celtic fan entities representing tens of thousands of Celtic fans around the world have signed an open letter with 7 explicit questions – these questions, and those asking them, have been ignored.”
The open letter came in the aftermath of recent chants to ‘sack the board’ following the Hoops’ disappointing transfer window and before the exit from the Champions League at the hands of Kairat Almaty.
And now Sutton has responded to Celts’ statement, posting on X, formerly Twitter, that he didn’t think it was likely to win supporters round.
Sutton said: “I’m not sure the club statement was a good idea.
“Anyone reading that back and thinking it would appease any Celtic fan is misguided.”
A disappointing transfer deadline day only added to Hoops fans’ frustrations, with a move to make Kasper Dolberg the man to replace Swansea-bound Adam Idah falling through.
Free agent Kelechi Iheanacho was eventually announced as the new striker signing Brendan Rodgers had wanted, with winger Sebastian Tounekti also arriving before the deadline.
Those were two of 11 total signings by Celts in the window, but with 13 players leaving and a net profit made of £13.6m, supporters have been left furious.
