Special Olympics Cayman Islands is set to launch its new season with a kick-off event featuring an accomplished Olympian as a guest speaker.
Taking place on 20 Sept. from 9-11am at the Grand Cayman Marriott Resort, the event aims to celebrate Special Olympics athletes and kick off the 2025/26 season with an infusion of energy, inspiration and community spirit.

British Olympian Laviai Nielsen will be the guest speaker, sharing her story with the attendees.
Nielsen, 29, a 400-metre sprinter, represented Great Britain on the world stage at numerous World Championships and European Championships.
Her medal haul includes a silver in the 4x400m relay at the 2017 World Championships, a bronze at the 2022 World Championships, and two bronze medals from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in both the women’s and mixed 4x400m relays.
“It’s such an honour to be in Cayman to celebrate the opening of this qualifying season for Special Olympics together with the athletes and their families,” Nielsen said.
She shared that Cayman is a place she comes “to regenerate after busy racing seasons”, adding, “it’s great to be back”.
