RAI BENJAMIN was disqualified while wearing a crown after winning gold in the 400m hurdles.
But things became even more awkward when the American was REINSTATED as champion following a desperate appeal.
The wild scenes occurred at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Benjamin cruised to glory in the hurdles final despite a tough field.
And he finished as top dog to spark wild celebrations with his USA teammates.
Benjamin then placed a gold crown on his head to celebrate the occasion.
But his joy quickly turned to misery when it emerged he was being disqualified.
Benjamin had struck down a hurdle with an ill-timed jump during his charge to victory.
The hurdle slightly teetered to its right as it fell.
And race judges harshly claimed it had impacted a competitor.
Benjamin was left in disbelief as the news filtered through.
He awkwardly removed his gold helmet as he absorbed the blow.
