With just two houses engaging in heated rivalry at the Vieux Fort Infant and Primary Schools, Walcott triumphed on Wednesday at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds. After hours of spirited competition, Walcott defeated Lewis, 496 points to 437, with teachers, parents, family, and friends cheering the young athletes to give their best.
In the girls open 1000m run, McKenzee Ambrose, Andia Tal, and Shannia Classe performed commendably, while the boys 1200m race saw strong performances from Markie Louis, Treyvion Felicien, and Khalil Jonas.
The Under-11 and Under-13 divisions produced several high-quality performances. Arianna Descartes demonstrated exceptional consistency in the U11 girls’ races, while Aiden Smith emerged as a dominant competitor in the U13 boys’ category. Mariella Descartes also delivered strong performances in the U13 girls’ middle-distance events.
Relay events were a central feature of the programme, highlighting teamwork, coordination, and discipline. Effective baton exchanges and strong anchor legs by athletes such as Arianna Descartes, Kyron Beckford, Curticia Marcellin, Aiden Smith, and Nya Joseph contributed significantly to relay successes in the U11 and U13 divisions.
The meet was organised under the leadership of physical education teachers Sashima Harry and Jesse Fontallio.
“The principals of both schools are very open to physical education, because they see it as part of the overall growth of the students,” shared Fontallio. “So they are very supportive; they give their full support to whatever events we are having and to the children.
He went on to explain that Wednesday’s meet was the culmination of several weeks of training. The meet, he concluded, reflected the importance of the corporate community, and highlighted the role of parents.
“We’ve been preparing from the time school reopened for the second term,” Fontalio told St Lucia Times. “Preparation has been going very well, the kids have been enthusiastic, they have been having fun at training.
“We have received tremendous support from the community, especially the commercial sector. We received some good donations. Parents have been showing up for their kids, as can be seen today, there are many parents there to support their children. So support has been great,” he added.
Overall, the meet served as a practical demonstration of inter-school collaboration, holistic student development, and the effective implementation of physical education objectives. The collaborative sports meet has established a strong framework for future joint initiatives within the Vieux Fort district and continues to support the development of well-rounded students, aptly reflecting the ethos of ‘Phoenix Stars Rising’.
