The Rotary Club of Grenada proudly celebrated a significant milestone as the first cohort of students from the Grenada School for Special Education (GSSE) successfully completed 8 weeks of swimming instruction under the club’s Learn to Swim initiative.
The programme culminated in a heartfelt graduation ceremony honouring the students’ determination, resilience, and achievement. The atmosphere was filled with joy as proud smiles and visible excitement reflected what this accomplishment truly meant. For the children, this was more than a ceremony — it was a moment of empowerment. They felt accomplished. They felt brave. They felt seen.
“This initiative represents Rotary in action,” said Julia Lawrence, President of the Rotary Club of Grenada. “We believe every child deserves opportunity, inclusion, and the chance to build confidence in a safe and supportive environment. Watching these students progress and celebrate their achievements reinforces why we serve.”
For students of the Grenada School for Special Education, learning to swim goes beyond recreation. It builds essential life-saving skills, fosters independence, and strengthens self-confidence — outcomes that can positively shape their future.
As part of the initiative, swimwear was generously donated and formally handed over to ensure that every child can participate fully and with dignity. The club remains committed to removing barriers that limit access to opportunity.
The Rotary Club of Grenada extends special recognition to Deb Eastwood of Get Grenada Swimming, whose expertise, patience, and unwavering dedication were instrumental in guiding the students through their swimming journey.
“This programme embodies Rotary’s core values — Service Above Self, Fellowship, Integrity, Leadership, and Diversity and Inclusion,” added President Lawrence. “We are not simply teaching children to swim. We are investing in safer communities, empowered youth, and a more inclusive Grenada.”
