Virgin Islands sports ambassador Michelle Smith reached another major milestone in her upward trajectory, setting a new V.I. national record in the 800 meters at the 2026 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

She ran a fast-paced 2:04.52, slicing two full seconds off her previous best and reaffirming her place among the NCAA’s top young athletic talents.
Smith’s record-breaking performance came in the preliminary round, where she delivered a composed, confident race that secured her spot in the SEC final and rewrote the Virgin Islands record books. Her new time surpasses both her national indoor record of 2:06.72 and her national outdoor record of 2:06.18, marking a significant leap forward as she continues her transition into elite collegiate competition.
The SEC is widely regarded as the strongest middle‑distance conference in the NCAA, and the women’s 800m final reflected that intensity. Smith lined up against seasoned collegiate standouts and international-level competitors, navigating a fast and tactical race. She ultimately finished 8th overall, a result that underscores both the depth of the field and her growing ability to compete at the highest level.
Even with the final’s outcome, her record-setting prelim stood out as one of the most meaningful achievements of the meet for the Virgin Islands—another sign that Michelle Smith’s ceiling continues to rise, and her impact on territorial athletics is only just beginning.
