FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS, March 13–14 — Blazing performances in the three shortest events yielded some amazing records, but it was the Arkansas Razorbacks that delivered the resounding win in Doug Case’s first year at the helm.
The first record came to Kayinsola Ajayi in the dash. That result seemed unlikely in the heats when Razorback Jelani Watkins blasted a 6.46 to miss the Collegiate Record by a mere 0.01, with Ajayi behind him at 6.51. In the final, Ajayi caught lightning in lane 6. Watkins, in 4, chased hard and made headway, but not enough to catch the runaway Auburn junior from Nigeria.
Ajayi’s 6.45 tied his own =CR clocking at the SEC 2 weeks earlier in an already-crowded space, with others who ran that fast in the past including Leonard Myles Mills of BYU (’99) and Christian Coleman of Tennessee (’17), not to mention the mark set with a questionable start by Terrence Jones of Texas Tech in ’22.
Said Ajayi, “I don’t care about the time.”
The second came in the 200. After Florida’s Wanya McCoy blasted a 20.17 in the first section, fans wanted to see what USC’s Garrett Kaalund could do. The USC senior had run a surprising 20.06 to win the Big 10. Here he started in lane 5. Despite the fast start of Watkins in 6, Kaalund caught him off the turn and streaked to a 4-meter win in an American and Collegiate Record of 19.95. That misses Frank Fredericks’ World Record by just 0.03 and makes Kaalund only the second to break 20 indoors.
Kaalund said when he stepped on the track, he decided he could break 20. “I don’t care, I’m running it today,” he told himself.
That yet another CR was on the brink of falling became evident in the heats of the hurdles, where defending champion Ja’Kobe Tharp seared a 7.36 to move to No. 2 on the Collegiate and U.S. all-time lists, and =4 in world history. Bradley Franklin of Samford ran 7.42 in the next heat to keep the pressure on.
Tharp hurdled flawlessly in the final, leaning across the line in 7.32. That sliced 0.03 off Grant Holloway’s standard from ’19. Now Tharp is behind only the Florida alum and Britain’s Colin Jackson in world history. Franklin scored 2nd in 7.43, with Baylor’s Demario Prince 3rd in 7.48. “The plans were just to win,” said Tharp, who called the record “a huge bonus.”

In his quest to finally win an indoor title to go with his cross country and outdoor crowns, New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel took the lead in the final mile of the 5000 and ground out a 4:00.07 final 1600. That put the hurt on the field, but at the bell he still had three others for company. It was Villanova’s Marco Langon, in 4th at the bell, who threw down the biggest kick, but Samuel saved a gear and came away with the win, 13:36.58 to 13:36.98.
The distance medley got off to an amazing start. Northern Arizona’s Rheinhardt Harrison (2:49.80) led Michigan’s Brendan Herger (2:50.07) through 1200. Josiah Johnson kept the Lumberjacks in front with a 45.83, though recent 600 CR-setter Miles Brown brought the Wolverines a bit closer with his 45.78. Devyn Wright carried Arkansas into 3rd with his 44.82. Michigan’s Camden Law then took over on his 1:46.78 carry, with NAU’s Tor Hortung-Davidsen (1:47.20) just 0.19 behind.
At that point, both teams threatened the CR. That changed when the milers dropped into tactical mode. A 2:02 first 800 meant that 9 teams were in contention in the final laps. Then Lumberjack Colin Sahlman unleashed a brutal 25.0 closer, capping a 3:57.13 for the win in 9:19.95. Arkansas’s Brian Masai kicked to 2nd in 9:21.42. Virginia Tech got 3rd in 9:21.69, helped along by Christian Jackson’s 1:44.60 split. Michigan, with McFarland running 4:00.14, got 4th in 9:22.77.
On Saturday, the mile also went tactical. Virginia’s Gary Martin made his move with 400 to go, only to have BYU’s Carter Cutting jump ahead. He fought off multiple challenges and drove to a 3:58.94. Virginia Tech’s George Couttie grabbed 2nd in 3:59.30. McFarland came from too far back to finish fastest with his 26.34 closer, nipping Martin 3:59.45–3:59.50.
“By the last corner I was like, someone’s coming, someone’s coming,” said Cutting. “I was holding on for dear life.”
The Razorbacks, who ended day 1 in the lead at 14 points, soon started adding more to the tally, with 8 points from Watkins in the dash. Then in the 400, Jordan Pierre won the first section in 44.85. A dominating 44.57 by Alabama’s Samuel Ogazi in the second earned the win, with Florida’s Justin Braun at 44.67. Pierre scored 6 more for Arkansas.
The 800 symbolized Arkansas’s momentum. Penn State’s Handal Roban led through splits of 25.40, 52.08 and 1:19.25 with Razorbacks Rivaldo Marshall and Tyrice Taylor staying close. On the last backstretch, the attack came. Marshall passed inside while A&M’s Peter Narumbe went outside. Taylor followed, sweeping past Narumbe and joining Marshall at the front. The two teammates joyfully sprinted away, sharing their disbelief at scoring an 18-point sweep. For Taylor it was a PR 1:46.00, with Marshall at 1:46.12. Penn State’s Allon Clay sprinted in for 3rd in 1:46.44.

In a rough-and-tumble 3000, Sahlman passed leader Samuel at the bell with Marco Langon close behind. When the Villanovan also tried to get past, the elbows came out. The two battled into the turn and started pulling even with Sahlman. Samuel clipped Sahlman’s stride while elbowing Langon back. Samuel caught Sahlman (7:41.66) on the line by a mere 0.005, with Oregon’s Simeon Birnbaum kicking to 3rd in 7:41.85 and Langon crossing in 7:42.56.
Though Samuel defended his tactics as necessary to protect his position, officials gave him a DQ.
With the win secured, Arkansas led the first section of the 4×4 in 3:03.98. That held up until the third section, when South Carolina (3:02.07), Alabama (3:03.60) and Tennessee (3:03.73) took the first three spots.
Arkansas’s Case said he would enjoy the team victory “for about 5 minutes” before getting to work on the next one. His high point? The 800. “Those guys waving at me as they went by, I was like, ‘just run the race.’”
