Defending champions Cavalier clipped Treasure Beach FC 1-0 in a tightly contested Jamaica Premier League encounter at the St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) Sports Complex yesterday.
The win pushed Cavaliers to fifth in the standings with 42 points, while Treasure Beach remained in 11th place with 27.
Romarion Thomas scored in the 66th minute to give Cavalier a deserved victory against a determined Treasure Beach team.
David Laylor, coach of Cavalier, attributed the win to their persistent effort throughout the game and strategic play against an unpredictable Treasure Beach team.
“Treasure Beach are a tricky team to play against. They are a hard-running unit that can surprise any of the ‘big’ teams in the league,” said Laylor.
“We knew that we had to play hard and play disciplined also, and we came up with the win,” Laylor added, noting that his team kept pressing at all times.
Meanwhile, Kemar Ricketts, coach of Treasure Beach, acknowledged the need for improvement, particularly in the final phase of play, where better combinations were lacking.
“I think in certain phases we weren’t good enough, especially in the final phase. We were doing well to the mid-part of the pitch but in the final third we were lacking,” said Ricketts
“We needed a bit more combinations and also a little more luck. We didn’t have that today. We have to get back to training and do some work, and get ready for the next game,” added Ricketts, who said his team needed to defend better in future games.
Treasure Beach ended the game with five corners but no attempt on goal.
