Three-time defending champions Frazsiers Whip extended their perfect start to the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) season, defeating Springers United 4-0 in Zone B action yesterday at the Excelsior High School field.
Goals from Christina Salmon (eighth minute), Shanel Spence (35th), Tavia Gayle (55th) and Nevillegail Able (63rd) handed Frazsiers Whip their third-straight win.
Courtney Dowdie, head coach of Frazsiers Whip, praised his players for their performance against a team he described as one of the best in their zone.
“I’m pleased with the performance because I know that the Springers team is one of the better teams in the group,” Dowdie explained.
“Coming into this game, we knew that the Springers team was going to come on a high. They have gone two [wins] from two, so it’s basically a top-of-the-table clash, even though it’s early season,” Dowdie said.
Frazsiers Whip were in control of the proceedings from kick-off, and opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes.
Salmon got the first goal when she was found free at the back post and was on hand to send a low-driven volley out of the goalkeeper’s reach.
Springers were the architects of their own downfall for the second goal, conceding through a series of unfortunate events.
A failed attempt at a clearance from Springers handed the ball to Danishca Rattray in a dangerous area.
Rattray’s attempt to pass the ball was then closed down, but Springers again failed to clear their lines following a miskick from the defender, allowing Spence to take a shot at goal.
Spence’s resulting shot was a tame effort which should have been saved, but a goalkeeping error saw it bundled across the line.
Frazsiers Whip’s third was a thing of beauty when Gayle lined up an effort from 30 yards out and had the goalkeeper beaten for pace at her near post.
The defending champions closed off the match with another stunning effort, this time through Able whose driven free kick arrowed into the bottom right corner.
With the win, Frazsiers Whip maintain control of Zone B, moving to a perfect nine points.
Springers remain second in the standings on six points, tied with Los Perfectos, but they hold the advantage with a better goal difference.
Also in Zone B action, Los Perfectos edged Federal United 1-0 in a close affair, while Mile Gully got the better of Real MoBay 3-1.
Over in Zone A, Cavalier dropped points for the second time this season, playing out a scoreless draw against Proven Girls, while Arnett Gardens remained perfect with a dominant 4-1 win over WiFi United.
The fixture between Real Mona and UWI Women’s was not played because of incorrect field markings and measurements.
