Jamaica College’s (JC) Makaelan Woods clocked 46.39 seconds to lead all qualifiers into the final of the Boys’ Class One 400m at the ISSA GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
Woods, who will start as the favourite for gold, is expected to face strong competition from William Knibb Memorial High’s Jabari Matheson (46.54), Fogo Road High’s Paul Henry (46.72), Hydel High’s Junior Galimore (46.76), Titchfield High’s Nishawn Walker (46.88), JC’s Omary Robinson (46.90), and Kingston College’s Jabulani McLeod (46.80).
Calabar High’s Diwayne Sharpe also impressed, clocking 46.97 to lead all qualifiers into the final of the Boys’ Class Two 400m.
Sharpe, who is highly favoured to win the event, will be challenged by Excelsior High’s Jaeden Campbell (47.13), Kingston College’s Jason Pitter (47.24), Lacovia High’s Nicholas Jones (48.22), JC’s Oneil Lawrence (48.44), and Rusea’s High’s Tiene Barrett (48.59).
In Class Three, JC’s Jayden White produced an outstanding run of 50.62 to top the qualifiers heading into the final.
White, the only athlete from the semi-finals to dip below the 51-second mark, will be joined by his teammate Tariq Creary (51.43), Kingston College’s Taariq Gordon (50.30), Lacovia High’s Darrian Francis (51.09), Tarrant High’s Janhard Taylor (51.64), Titchfield High’s Rhomarni Bennett (51.88), St Elizabeth Technical High School’s Orlando Henry (51.34), and Kingston College’s Maleeq Fellows (51.58).
The final will be contested tomorrow.
