Charlestown Primary School delivered a commanding performance to capture the 2026 Gulf Insurance Ltd. Inter-Primary School Championship, held at the Nevis Athletic Stadium on Wednesday, April 1.
Thousands of spectators filled the venue in a sea of vibrant colours for the island’s premier schools’ athletics event, widely known as the “Mini Olympics.”
At the end of a keenly contested meet, Charlestown Primary School Tigers secured the championship title for a seventh straight year with an impressive 44-medal haul, comprising 18 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze. Joycelyn Liburd Primary School Falcons placed second with 13 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze, while Ivor Walters Primary School Mustangs finished third with 10 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze.
St. Thomas Primary School Jaguars followed with 8 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze, while Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School Lions recorded 6 gold, 4 silver and 10 bronze. St. James Primary School Thunders tallied 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Nevis Academy Eagles secured 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze, Montessori Academy Monarchs finished with 1 gold and 5 silver, Maude Crosse Preparatory School Eagles had 1 gold and 4 bronze, and Violet O. Jeffers-Nicholls Primary School Blue Dragons recorded 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze.
Kevanie B. Richards and Andre Liburd served as patrons for the meet.
The day’s proceedings began with the traditional march past, followed by an inspection of the athletes by Deputy Governor-General Hyleeta Liburd, Minister of Education Hon. Troy Liburd, Permanent Secretary Zahnela Claxton, the patrons, and Sheldon Edwards, a representative of Gulf Insurance Ltd. A minute of silence was also observed in honour of sports enthusiast Lorna Hunkins and former student Lesticia Gumbs.
In remarks ahead of the competition, Mr. Edwards underscored the company’s long-standing investment in youth development, noting that the championship has, over the years, helped to shape future leaders through sport.
Minister Liburd, in his address, emphasised the importance of investing in children, describing them as the nation’s most valuable resource. He thanked the organising committee, volunteers, sponsors, and schools for their continued support, while encouraging patrons to support the athletes in a positive and respectful manner.
Special recognition was also given to Andre Liburd and Conrad Smithen for their sterling contribution to the development of the Inter-Primary Championships over the years.
The championships once again showcased the depth of young athletic talent on Nevis, delivering a spirited and memorable day of competition.
