The Ministry of Sports Schools Knock-Out Cup continued on Friday, at the ABFA Technical Center with two contrasting matches that produced drama both on and off the pitch.
In the first match of the day, Antigua Grammar School (AGS) secured a narrow 1-0 victory over All Saints Secondary School (ASSS) in what proved to be a closely contested affair.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Chance Joseph found the back of the net for AGS, scoring what would ultimately be the match-winner. Both teams battled hard throughout the encounter, but AGS’s defensive organization and Joseph’s clinical finishing proved to be the difference in advancing to the next round.
Harrison Center Survives Penalty Drama
The second fixture provided much more excitement as Harrison Center and Ottos Comprehensive School (OCS) played out a thrilling 1-1 draw before Harrison Center prevailed 5-3 in a penalty shootout.
The match got off to an unfortunate start for OCS when Mickyle Samuel scored an own goal in the 21st minute, giving Harrison Center an early advantage. However, OCS showed great character and resilience, with Demarre Swift equalizing for his team to level the score at 1-1.
With neither side able to find a winner in regular time, the match proceeded to penalties where Harrison Center held their nerve to win the shootout 5-3, securing their place in the next round of the competition.
The weekend’s football action was overshadowed by an incident that occurred on Thursday, September 18th, involving Princess Margaret School (PMS). What started as an excellent performance by Princess Margaret School (PMS) was brought to an abrupt and disappointing end.
With PMS leading 3-1 and just 15 minutes remaining in their match, an object was reportedly thrown at the referee, forcing officials to abandon the game with the official decision to be made today. The incident robbed PMS of what appeared to be a certain victory and raised serious concerns about conduct and sportsmanship in youth football.
The abandonment not only denied PMS the opportunity to complete what seemed like a comfortable win but also highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by match officials in maintaining order during competitive fixtures.
