There were wins for All Saints Slam and Spanish Heat 2 as they both wrapped up their best of three series by 2-1 margins to advance to the semifinals round of the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) Playoffs at the JSC basketball complex on Thursday night.
Facing off in the feature clash of a double-header, All Saints Slam were propelled by Humroy Wright’s game-high 27 points as they beat Spanish Heat 1 by an 83-78 margin.
Slam, who forfeited game two after convincingly claiming game one, started slow and were outscored 19-12 by Spanish Heat in the opening quarter. The All Saints men however rebounded to claim the second and third quarters 26-17 and 28-21 respectively. Spanish Heat claimed the fourth quarter 21-17 but it was not enough to overhaul the deficit.
Wilkin Floyd contributed with 15 points and nine rebounds while Andrew Venture and Keddy Martin had 10 and nine points each for the victors. Venture also had seven rebounds and 10 assists.
In a losing effort, Damian Floyd led for Spanish Heat with 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Daniel Perez contributed with 22 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Steven Matthew sank 15 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished six assists.
Meanwhile, Spanish Heat 2 had better luck in the night’s opening fixture, beating Fearless Crew 77-57 to take their three-game series 2-1.
Spanish Heat were led by Charlie Daniel with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Erwin Rodriguez sank 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rohland Hamilton picked up 11 points and 23 rebounds in the victory.
Spanish Heat started strong, outscoring their opponents 23-8 and 20-14 in the first and second quarters. Fearless Crew enjoyed a slim 15-14 advantage in the third quarter while the scores were level 20-20 in the final quarter.
In a losing effort, Rafiki Harris hit a game-high 28 points and grabbed six rebounds. Takeem Martin contributed with 11 points and 18 rebounds.
Playoffs action continues on Saturday night when Old Road Daggers take on Flyers 2 at 6:45pm in game three of their D2 series while in D1, Flyers face All Saints Slam in the opening clash of their semifinals series.
