Wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew, should he find his way into the final 11 during West Indies’ historic tour to Nepal, is hoping to score big and be amongst the top scorers for the region’s senior men’s team.
Andrew has been named in a 15-member squad for a historic T20 International series against Nepal stating September 27 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the UAE. The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and Leeward Islands player, retains his spot in the team following the series against Australia in July.
“Once selected to play, it’s just to grab the opportunity with both hands and hopefully be among the top leading runs scorers in the series. No, I wasn’t surprised getting a call because I know I’m in the plans of the future. So getting a call wasn’t a surprise to me,” he said.
Andrew finished the recently-held Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with 156 runs across seven innings and an average of 22.28. The 18-year-old never really got going with the bat, with his highest of 40 coming against Trinbago Knight Riders on August 26.
Having only represented West Indies in the shorter format of the game, Andrew made it clear that his goal is to, one day, play in multiple formats.
“I’m open to playing other formats but I’ve been selected to play this [T20] at this moment so it’s just about grabbing opportunities at this point and I’m always open to playing all formats,” he said.
Also selected for the series is Andrew’s Antigua and Barbuda, Leeward Islands and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons teammate, Karima Gore who received his maiden call up to a senior men’s West Indies team.
