Antigua and Barbuda overpowered Anguilla 63-17 on the opening day of the 5th ECCB International Series at the Tanteen Netball Courts on Saturday, showing they are serious contenders for the tournament’s title despite rain disrupting most of the scheduled matches.
The twin-island nation’s netball team controlled the game from start to finish with Rayana Regis leading the scoring, netting an impressive 45 goals from 55 attempts. Her strong display was well-supported by Everdine Parker-Bernard, who added 18 goals to the decisive victory.
Antigua and Barbuda’s balanced offensive play and accurate shooting left Anguilla with little response, as the 46-point margin showed the difference in quality between the two sides. The performance signals Antigua and Barbuda’s intentions to challenge the tournament’s top teams, particularly defending OECS champions St Vincent and the Grenadines and home-backed Grenada, who also started well with a 65-43 win over Dominica led by Lottysha Cato’s 56 goals.
However, the opening day proved frustrating for organizers as rain repeatedly soaked the open-court facility, forcing the cancellation of three matches including St Vincent’s strong start against debutants Guyana (leading 41-10) and St Lucia’s good showing against Montserrat (ahead 38-5), while the Barbados versus Cayman Islands fixture never began.
The weather problems have created scheduling difficulties for the week-long tournament, which features both regional OECS competition and an international section including Barbados, Cayman Islands, and Guyana making their tournament debut.
