Team Antigua and Barbuda picked up their second win of the ongoing Davis Cup Tennis tournament with a 2-1 victory over Suriname at the National Racquet Sports Centre in Trinidad on Thursday.
Contesting the Americas, Group IV section of the event, Antigua and Barbuda’s number 1 seed, Jody Maginley, easily dispatched of Yigal Bergen 6-2, 6-2 to take the singles match. Maginley then joined forces with Rodain Monelle to claim the doubles fixture 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
In their previous match-up, Antigua and Barbuda were beaten 3-0 by the Bahamas.
In the first match, Deandre Weeks suffered a straight sets 6-0, 6-0 loss to Donte Armbrister. It was the Bahamian’s first-ever win in singles in Davis Cup play. In the other singles clash, Maginley put up a fight but was beaten Denali Nottage 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4, to clinch the tie for The Bahamas.
In the doubles contest, the Antigua and Barbuda pair of Monelle and Ron Murraine were beaten 6-0, 6-2 in straight sets by the Bahamian team of Armbrister and Kofi Bowe.
In their opening match on August 4, Antigua and Barbuda defeated Panama 2-1 to start on a winning note.
Maginley got the ball rolling with an easy singles triumph over Davis Rodriguez, winning the contest 6-0, 6-3. Maginley and Monelle then claimed the doubles with scores of 7-6, 6-0 over their opponents.
