The Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) is targeting August 2026 for hosting a regional basketball tournament that would include top teams from across the Caribbean.
This is according to the General Secretary/PRO of the association, Carlena Humphreys, who made the revelation on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show.
“We do have a few countries who have already shown interest. We have Guyana who said they definitely would be onboard once we give additional information … Cayman Islands, Grenada; so a few regional heavy-hitters have already said that they are interested. We are still in the initial stages of planning stuff but we are hoping to host this tournament sometime in August and that’s going to be a senior tournament. I also got some correspondence where they said they are trying to stage a CBC senior tournament next year summer as well,” she said.
Her revelation was in response to questions regarding a two-year period of inactivity for the senior men’s team. The last time Antigua and Barbuda competed as a unit was in June of 2023 when they took part in the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 Pre-Qualifiers held in Nicaragua.
Humphreys, with the association’s next constituted elections due in June next year, moved to dispel reports that she could be contending for the top spot, signalling she will focus on other areas of the sport.
“It is something that I was contemplating for a while but I do not think I am going to be throwing my hat into the ring. It’s been a long four years; I started as the PRO and then had to transition into the Gen Sec position, and you know I love basketball but I don’t think I am going to run for the presidency but I am always available to anyone who needs my assistance,” she said.
“I moreso want to delve into the aspect of hosting different tournaments and even just bringing a shining light on our athletes that we have here, so maybe you may see me being an ‘agent’ for them going forward, just to push a few of our guys. A lot of these guys don’t understand how to market themselves to attract, whether it’s a contract or the right school,” she added.
It is widely reported that sitting president Michael Freeland, who recently became a political candidate for the country’s next general elections due in 2028, may not seek re-election as he will turn his attention towards his political campaign.
