By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team is set to depart for Trinidad and Tobago in two groups this Friday and Saturday as they gear up for their World Cup qualifying match against Montserrat on Wednesday, June 4 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.
Due to Montserrat not having a FIFA-approved facility for international matches, they will be playing their home fixture in Trinidad and Tobago.
The team’s journey will take them through Miami, United States, where both groups will transit before arriving in Trinidad and Tobago. This travel arrangement is part of the final preparations leading up to the critical international fixture.
The squad has been training under the guidance of a Mexican coaching team led by Daniel Bartelotto, fine-tuning their skills ahead of departure. While 27 players have been training, the roster will surely be trimmed before the final squad makes the journey.
Belize is coming off a 1-1 draw in last week’s friendly match against Club Deportivo Aragón, a Mexican exhibition team, as part of their warm-up games ahead of the qualifiers. Additionally, the squad will face Mexican side NEZA this Thursday at 7:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. Entrance for the match is $10, and the BMNT hope to build momentum before their departure.
Following their match against Montserrat, the BMNT will return home to play Panama on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
Belize face an uphill battle in the qualifiers, having lost their first two matches last year against Nicaragua (4-0) and Guyana (3-1) and currently sitting with zero points. With Nicaragua and Panama leading the standings with six points each, Belize’s chances of advancing are extremely slim.
