By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Volleyball Association (BVA) extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, students, former teammates, and fellow referees of Brian Castillo, a dedicated Education Officer, respected educator, and passionate volleyball referee. His passing is a tremendous loss to the education and sports communities in Belize.

Forty-two-year-old Castillo died in a golf car accident in San Pedro on Monday, May 19.
“He represented Belize on the men’s volleyball national team in 1997–1998, later transitioning to officiating,” the BVA said. “From line judge at local and regional tournaments to serving as a national referee, Brian remained a devoted official and supporter of volleyball until his passing.”
The BVA recounted that Castillo began his career as an educator at Edward P. Yorke High School before continuing his service at the Ministry of Education. His commitment to student development shaped the lives of countless young Belizeans, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s education system. His passion for teaching and mentorship extended beyond the classroom, inspiring many both academically and athletically.
The BVA added that as a proud resident of Dangriga, Brian’s love for volleyball started in his hometown, where he played alongside his family, who shared his enthusiasm for sports. His talent and dedication led him to join the SQ Dragons Club in Belize City, where he achieved five championships over a remarkable seven-year period. His contributions to Belizean volleyball extended beyond playing—he represented Belize on the men’s national team and afterwards became a referee.
According to the BVA, Brian Castillo was a steadfast supporter of the sport, always advocating for fairness and professionalism on the court. His commitment to volleyball remained unwavering throughout his life.
The BVA said the loss of Brian Castillo is deeply felt by the entire volleyball community and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion, dedication, and impact will not be forgotten.
