By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean midfielder Jaheim Roy Mena has officially joined Alebrijes de Oaxaca for the 2025–2026 Liga BBVA Expansión MX season, marking the first active transfer under the Football Federation of Belize’s new partnership with the Mexican club.

Mena, who played last season for the San Pedro Pirates in the Premier League of Belize and represented the Belize Men’s National Team, began training with Alebrijes on Monday, August 25. His debut is expected soon, with Alebrijes set to face Venados FC this Friday, August 30. Venados, based in Mérida, are one of 15 clubs competing in Mexico’s second-tier professional league this season.
Alebrijes currently sit 13th in the standings, with one point from three matches. It’s a slow start for the club, but with Jaheim Mena now in the mix, Belizean fans will be hoping his presence can help shift momentum. Their next match against Venados could be a turning point.

The move follows a three-week pre-season trial held in June, where Mena, Freybin Pagoada, Deshawon Nembhard, and Izon Gill trained under head coach Arturo Alvarado alongside players from Mexico’s Liga TDP and Liga Premier. Mena and Pagoada were selected to join the squad, with Pagoada set to officially transfer during the January registration window for the second half of the season.
Alebrijes had previously described the collaboration as “just the beginning of a great alliance” with the FFB, emphasizing their commitment to developing and showcasing Belizean talent. The FFB echoed that sentiment in its latest statement, calling the partnership “an exciting new chapter focused on professional development and national team growth.”
Mena’s integration into the squad not only validates his performance during trials but also signals a broader opportunity for Belizean footballers to gain international exposure through this partnership.
Belizean fans will be watching closely. For Mena, the challenge begins now. For Belizean football, the horizon just got wider.
