The K’iinich Ahau Belize Poktapok Team is preparing to represent the country at the 6th International Poktapok Tournament in Copán Ruinas, Honduras. The tournament is taking place from September 25–28, 2025. However, the team is currently $5,000 BZD short of their fundraising goal and is seeking financial support from the public and private sectors to make the trip possible.
Sponsorship will help cover the cost of travel and stay for a Belizean delegation consisting of 25 members. Among the delegation are 20 players, 2 coaches, a referee, sports massage therapist, and a team manager.
Team leader Felicita Cantun has been instrumental in spearheading the revival of Poktapok in Belize – a traditional Maya ballgame that forms part of a larger mission to preserve and promote indigenous heritage and cultural pride. Since its founding in 2022, the K’iinich Ahau team has already achieved regional and international recognition. The men’s team earned a second-place finish at last year’s tournament, and the women’s team was crowned champions at the 2024 Poktapok tournament in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Several team members are also two-time World Cup champions.
The upcoming tournament will bring together 20 teams from across the region, each vying for top honors in this culturally significant sport. With the event fast approaching, the team is working diligently to secure the remaining funds needed to cover travel and logistics.
