By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Capital City Kings secured a vital road win over the Punta Gorda Panthers, clinching a 92–79 victory in the Belize Premier Basketball League (BPBL) at the PG Sporting Complex on Saturday, July 19, 2025 in a high-intensity BPBL matchup that saw sharp shooting, dominant rebounding, and a standout fourth-quarter push.
The Kings were paced by point guard Nisani Mendez, who exploded for 27 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds in a commanding 35-minute performance. Mendez shot an efficient 56.3% from the field, sank 8 of 11 free throws, and hit a key three-pointer during a late surge that sealed the result.
Veteran Brandon Flowers added 22 points, 8 boards, and 3 assists, while forward John Kelly owned the paint with a 13-rebound effort and 11 points. Sharpshooter Shane Pratt came alive from deep, drilling 3 of 7 triples and converting all 4 free throws for 15 points.
Despite 15 team turnovers, Belmopan finished with a solid 44.9% shooting rate, connected on 9 of 23 three-point attempts (39.1%), and hit 21 of 29 free throws (72.4%), showing composure in crunch time.
Panthers’ scoring duo Marquise Cunningham and Kyle Steward both dropped 28 points, combining for 19 field goals, 16 rebounds, and 16 of the team’s 20 made free throws. Cunningham led all rebounders with 18, while Steward added 9 boards and went 7-of-9 from the line.
Though the Panthers led early behind their power forwards, shooting woes haunted the squad down the stretch. PG shot just 32.1% overall, made 5 of 22 threes (22.7%), and committed 11 turnovers, allowing the Kings to dominate transition and seal the win.
Belmopan’s victory marks their first road win of the season, snapping a six-game drought and lifting them just half a game behind Corozal. The Panthers, meanwhile, drop their sixth straight and continue to seek answers on defense and perimeter execution.
