Cayman Cricket’s second-quarter report shows a period of significant progress, featuring victories, the appointment of new leadership and a clear vision for what lies ahead.
The national men’s team, though narrowly missing out on qualification, delivered an exceptional performance at the International Cricket Council T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Canada from 15-21 June.
The team’s hard work was highlighted by a dominant 9-wicket victory over Bermuda in the return match.
The victory was secured by an incredible batting display, with Ramone Sealy hitting five-consecutive sixes and partnering with Jermaine Baker to seal the win.
Baker was a force to be reckoned with throughout the tournament, earning both batsman of the tournament and tournament MVP, an incredible achievement that saw him outshine players from cricketing powerhouses like Canada.
The team’s success in Canada was a testament to the leadership of coach Dave Bernard and assistant coach Andre McCarthy, a new hire during quarter two.
MAX60 in Cayman
With the qualifiers concluded, the second season of the MAX60 tournament rolled into action from 16-23 July at the Jimmy Powell Oval in West Bay.
“While the cricket on display was of high quality and showcased our island to the world, the event was unfortunately overshadowed by a series of issues related to non-payment of players. Cayman Cricket was not responsible for these issues. The sole responsibility rests with the event management team at BMP Sports,” the Cayman Cricket report said.
Despite the challenges, local players still managed to shine, with Sheldon Crawford delivering a standout 4-wicket haul and many others showcasing their impressive talent.
“While it is unfortunate that the tournament did not reach completion, we take this experience as a valuable lesson and remain committed to improving the structure and integrity of future events,” the report said.
Further strengthening the domestic game, the T10 competition concluded with Chilies Cricket Club emerging victorious as they defended a total of 121/2 to beat WestBay by 15 runs.
Planning for future
July also saw Cayman Cricket representatives attending the ICC Annual Conference in Singapore, where they were inspired by the models of smaller nations like Bahrain and Nepal.
These discussions highlighted the importance of creating a dedicated cricket operations team and appointing a chief executive officer to spearhead strategic growth and operational excellence.
In the report, Cayman Cricket said more updates will follow in the coming months regarding this development.
Looking ahead, Cayman Cricket is prioritising the development of women’s and youth cricket.
A new local women’s league is on the horizon, aiming to provide more consistent playing opportunities and foster a competitive environment for female athletes.
The organisation is also diligently working to secure funding for the under-19 boys’ team to attend the South American Championships in Argentina this September, recognising the crucial role these international tours play in the growth of young players.
Also on the horizon is the Dream 11 Franchise Tournament in October.
“The successful bid was submitted by a private entity, and while discussions are still in early stages, the outlook is positive,” the report said about the tournament.
“This event is expected to offer meaningful opportunities for local players and further cement the Cayman Islands as a desirable destination for international cricket,” the report said.
