The Cayman Islands men’s and women’s national 3×3 basketball teams concluded their challenging run at the 2025 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup in León, Mexico hosted from 27-30 Nov.
The women’s team, comprising Arleny Ebanks, Chloe Powery-Doxey, Khailan O’Connor, and Hannah Parchment, faced steep competition in their matchups, falling to the Dominican Republic 21-4 and the eventual silver medalists, Canada, 21-3.
The men’s squad, featuring Alexander Thompson, Brad Lansdell, Phillip Webb and Justin Collins, also encountered “elite international programs”, suffering losses to the eventual undefeated gold medalists, the United States, 21-4, and the host nation Mexico 21-11.
Despite the tough results on the scoreboard, officials from the Cayman Islands Basketball Association emphasised the importance of the experienced gained.
“The AmeriCup serves as a major international benchmark for developing national players and aligns with CIBA’s strategic objective to increase the Cayman Islands’ presence in global competitions,” they said.
CIBA also highlighted that “while the scores did not reflect the effort and preparation invested, the lessons learned will contribute to strengthening the national program across all age categories.”
Collin Anglin, CIBA president, added, “Competing against some of the best teams in the world gives our players a clear picture of the standard required at the international level. These are learning moments that help shape the future of Cayman basketball. We are proud of our teams for representing the Cayman Islands with heart and commitment.”
As CIBA continues its long-term development strategy, they said their focus remains on “athlete development, coaching education, and consistent participation in international tournaments to build competitiveness in both the 3×3 and traditional 5-on-5 formats” of the game.
