What’s better than one athlete going under a former collegiate record?
Two.
What’s better than two athletes going under a former collegiate record?
Three.
That’s what happened on Saturday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston when BYU’s Riley Chamberlain obliterated the collegiate record in the mile, going 4:20.61, and pulled Oregon’s Wilma Nielsen and BYU’s Jane Hedengren to the second- and third-fastest performances in collegiate history at 4:21.04 and 4:22.22, respectively. Former collegiate record-holder Silan Ayyildiz, Nielsen’s teammate, is now ranked fourth all-time at 4:23.46.
Chamberlain and Hedengren, for that matter, stayed patient while Nielsen kept up with the blistering opening pace. Nielsen split 809 meters at 2:07.47, while Chamberlain and Hedengren were almost three seconds behind. Chamberlain made her move over the final lap, closing in 32.20. Both Hedengren and Nielsen were notably slower in the final 400 meters, splitting 35.19 and 34.07, respectively.
