By Aaron Humes: In a heated exchange on social media, Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles has condemned former swimmer and outspoken activist Riley Gaines, labeling her comments regarding a transgender woman athlete as “sick,” the BBC reports. The conflict arose after Gaines criticized the Minnesota State High School League for removing negative comments on a post about the Chaplin Park girls’ team, which recently celebrated their State Championship and includes a transgender player.
Gaines, who has actively opposed the participation of transgender women in women’s sports, took to social media to mock the league’s decision. Biles responded directly, stating, “You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser.” Gaines tied for fifth place with transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in the 200 metre freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Championships, which has shaped her ongoing advocacy.

In her response, Biles emphasized the importance of supporting the transgender community, suggesting that stakeholders should focus on inclusivity in sports. “You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports,” Biles argued. She stressed that the current environment is unsafe for transgender athletes due to bullying and hostility.
Gaines, whose efforts to ban transgender women from competing against women and girls have gained national attention, expressed disappointment in Biles’ stance. She reassured her followers about her ongoing fight against what she perceives as unfairness in sports due to her past experiences. Since the controversial NCAA race, Gaines has voiced feelings of being “cheated, betrayed and violated.”
In February, Gaines was present at the White House when President Donald Trump signed an executive order aiming to exclude transgender girls and women from competing in women’s sports. Similarly, a ruling by the UK Supreme Court defined a woman solely by biological sex, prompting various UK sporting bodies to enact bans on transgender women participating in women’s sports.
