The boys’ 400m is shaping up to be a cracking affair across all classes, as this year’s top contenders flexed their muscles in qualifying earlier today at the National Stadium.
Titchfield’s Nishawn Walker led the way in Class One, setting the fastest qualifying time of 47.59 seconds.
Jamaica College’s (JC) Makaelan Woods was also in cruise control, posting 47.60 to advance from heat three.
Two of the event’s top contenders, Junior Gallimore of Hydel and William Knibb’s Jabari Matheson, looked comfortable as they clocked 47.77 and 47.68, respectively.
In Class Two, Nicholas Jones of Lacovia set the fastest time, dipping below 49 seconds to advance in 48.83.
Calabar’s Diwayne Sharpe, one of this season’s leading contenders, was comfortable in 49.49, while defending Class Two champion Jason Pitter of Kingston College (KC) took his heat in 49.86.
Calabar’s Rajeve Allison, last year’s Class Three champion, also threw his name into the hat with an impressive 49.21.
Lacovia again had the fastest qualifier in Class Three, as Darrian Francis led the way with 51.12, just ahead of KC’s Taariq Gordon (51.34) and JC’s Tariq Creary (51.81).
The semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow, starting with the boys’ Class Three semis at 9:35 a.m.
