National junior athlete Zonique Charles was among the record-breakers during last weekend’s National Track & Field Championships, throwing a distance of 42.09 meters to set a new mark in women’s javelin at the YASCO Sports Complex on Sunday.
Representing the Panthers International Club, Charles — who won gold in the girls’ under-17 division at the Carifta Games in April — bettered the 41.11 meters mark set by Amanda Edwards in April 2007 at the Carifta Games held in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The achievement won the 15-year-old Charles the Most Outstanding Performance award for the meet which spanned July 12-13 at the country’s lone track and field facility. Kadian Adams of SuperNova Athletics was second in the women’s javelin with a throw of 17.48 meters.
Fourteen-year-old track sensation Tyra Fenton was also among the standouts, setting a new national youth record of 23.12 in the women’s 200 meters event. However, the Roots Athletic Club athlete was forced to settle for second place behind national junior record holder and Power Speed Endurance (PSE) athlete, LaNica Locker, who repeated her record-breaking feat in a time of 22.99 seconds. National athlete, Alyssa Dyett of PSE, won the 200 meters bronze in a time of 24.24 seconds.

However, Fenton dominated the women’s 400 meters race, claiming the gold in a time 54.00 seconds. Kettia Ambrose of Panthers International, finished second in a time of 57.41 seconds while PSE’s Shenika Bentick grabbed bronze in a time of 58.93 seconds.
Jalen Dyett of PSE was best in the men’s 400, outpacing all challengers to win in a time of 46.72 seconds. Osei Gardner of Tiger’s Track Club won the silver in a time of 47.95 while Ryan Aikin of Panthers International won bronze in 49.48 seconds.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 200 meters final, Darion Skerritt of Phoenix Track Club, blazed the track to take gold in a time of 20.67 seconds. Skerritt outpaced PSE’s Dwayne Fleming who had to settle for silver in a time of 20.82 seconds. Gardner of Tiger’s Track Club, registered a time of 21.05 seconds to win the bronze medal.

In the 1500 meters clash, Roots Athletic Club’s Berquincia Eugene won gold in a time of 5:38.91 in the women’s division with Panthers International’s Omari Fraser claiming the men’s equivalent in 4:45.79. Berquincia returned to take gold in the 3000 meters women’s event.
