After leading both categories coming into the final day, Combermere School won the boys’ title but narrowly lost out among the girls, as action in the Esther Maynard and Shane Brathwaite Zone of the DASANI Powerade BSSAC Championships culminated at the Usain Bolt Complex today.
Cheered on by a large contingent of vocal supporters, Combermere amassed a total of 398 points in the boys’ title race, well clear of St Leonard’s Boys’ in second position on 353 points, with Christ Church Foundation School third on 282 points. The Alleyne School finished fourth on 207.5, with St George Secondary fifth on 202 points.
However, the battle among the girls was much tighter, with Christ Church Foundation’s 418 points narrowly edging Combermere, who finished on 415.5 points. Springer Memorial was third on 370.5 points, while The Alleyne School on 198 points and St George Secondary (145 points) rounded out the top five.
After 12 records were broken during Monday’s opening day of action in the Barbados Light and Power Company sponsored zone, the trend continued today.
It began in the Under-20 boys’ 400m hurdles, where the top three competitors all broke the old record of 58.96 seconds.
Tarell Johnson-Rouse of St George Secondary School crossed the line first in 54.56, well ahead of second placed Isaiah Marshall of Combermere School, who clocked 58.17. He was narrowly ahead of Dashane Hinds of Grantley Adams Memorial School in third, in 58.53.
Jace McClean of Combermere is the new record holder in the Under-13 boys’ 100m. His new mark stands at 12.34 seconds after he erased the old time of 12.61.
The Under-15 boys’ record was also bettered, with Jalino Hamlett of St Leonard’s Boys’ winning in 11.17 seconds, erasing the old mark of 11.60.
One day after breaking the Under-17 boys’ 1500m record, Alec Simmons of Comberemere reset the 800m mark as well. The new mark stands at 2:00.90, and replaces the old time of 2:01.88.
Later in the session, St George Secondary capped a solid performance by establishing a new record in the Open boys’ 4x400m relay. Their quartet stopped the clock in 3:15.03, bettering the previous record of 3:15.54.
The BSSAC series continues with competition in the Frank Blackman and Sada Williams Zones on March 19 and 20.
