By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025 Caribbean Elite Road Cycling Championship officially rolled into Belize City this weekend, bringing together the region’s top cyclists for two days of high-speed competition, national pride, and regional unity. With the Team Presentation held Friday evening at the Belize Biltmore Plaza, fans got their first glimpse of the elite athletes who will battle for glory on Belizean roads.
Leading the charge for the host nation is defending Caribbean Road Champion Cory Williams and U23 Subchampion Derrick Chavarria, both of whom earned podium finishes at the 2024 Championship in Georgetown, Guyana. Williams claimed gold in a thrilling ten-man sprint over 155 kilometers, clocking 3:46:07, and added bronze in the Individual Time Trial. Chavarria matched Williams’ winning time to earn silver in the U23 division and has since represented Belize at the World Championships in Rwanda alongside teammate Jyven Gonzalez. Also returning to defend their 2024 ITT titles are Bermuda’s Conor White and Trinidad & Tobago’s Teniel Campbell, both of whom headline the men’s and women’s time trial fields respectively

Minister Anthony Mahler’s Challenge to the Riders
During Friday’s presentation, Minister of Tourism and Sports Anthony Mahler delivered a stirring message to the assembled athletes and fans. Reflecting on his own cycling journey, he said, “Every ride reminds me that progress is never final—that there is always another stretch of road to conquer.”
Quoting cycling World Champion Tadej Pogačar, Mahler added, “True champions find peace in pain,” urging riders to embrace the mental and physical demands of the sport.
“Your greatest opponent isn’t any member of the peloton, but the limits within yourself,” he said. “Over the next couple days, I challenge each rider to dig deep and fight to bring glory to yourself, your families, and your nation.”
