By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize has extended its condolences to the family, friends, and community of Emil Figueroa, who passed away suddenly at his home this morning.

Figueroa, 53, was a well-respected figure in Belize’s cycling scene, previously a member of the Cycling Federation of Belize and making his mark as the owner and manager of the BECOL junior cycling team in Cayo. His dedication to the sport helped foster local talent and contributed to the growth of competitive cycling in the Cayo District.
Beyond his contributions to cycling, Figueroa was also an insurance agent, known for his professionalism and commitment in his field.
His son, Zahir Figueroa, who is himself a cyclist, shared the heartbreaking news, expressing his father’s deep passion for the sport and the impact he had on those who knew him.
“Emil had a spark in him, but he also had something far rarer: a goodness – genuine, uncalculated, and constant,” his friend Joe Awe said in a social media post.
“He gave of his time, his energy, his laughter, his loyalty. He was one of the kindest, most generous human beings I have ever had the privilege of calling a friend.”
The cycling community remembers Emil Figueroa not only as a mentor and supporter of the sport but also as a respected professional. His legacy will be fondly remembered.
May he rest in peace.
