National cyclist, Jomari King, has been discharged from the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center after scans revealed no broken bones or other internal injuries following a hit and run incident in Collins on Wednesday morning.
Omari King, father of the 18-year-old rider, told Observer media that although his son was in immense pain following the incident, no serious injuries were found by doctors following a comprehensive check at the country’s lone public hospital.
“Everything has come up with no broken bones; it’s just cuts and bruises so they sent him home. He is in pain; couldn’t really walk out so we had to put him in a wheelchair and I am just going to pick up some medication they asked that we give hm and then I am going to the police station to see if I get an update,” he said.
Jomari was struck by a motorcar while cycling with two other riders with reports indicating that after striking the cyclist, the driver fled the scene. Onlookers were however, able to record the vehicle’s registration number.

Omari urged drivers to be more cautious when sharing the road with other users, adding that he is happy there were other road users presents at the time of the accident.
“They need to have some respect for the cyclists on the road because we are all road users and we are doing this for our country also, some are doing it for their health and fitness and we need to share the road. What upset me about this situation is that they hit him, stop and then drove off and that is not something good because if he was by himself then what would have happened? Drivers just need to take caution when they see the cyclists out there because sometimes it doesn’t even take them five or 10 seconds to slowdown and then overtake when it’s safe to do so. They have to remember that it’s people’s lives out here and we’re human beings,” the distraught father said.
Two other cyclists, Jyme Bridges Jr and Aiden Tonge were training alongside Jomari when the incident occurred but managed to escape unhurt. Police investigations into the accident are ongoing.
In June of 2023, national cyclist, Andre Simon, died following prolonged hospitalization after he was struck by a motorist in May of 2022 while cycling on the Sir George Walter Highway. Simon received head trauma and internal bleeding as a result of the crash, which occurred on Mother’s Day.
