Reigning Guyana Cup and President’s Cup winner Dataman is set to ignite the New Year’s Day stakes on January 4 at Rising Sun Turf Club.
The trainer of the champion horse, Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr, described Dataman as the best in Guyana.
He also stated that Olympic Kremlin of the Slingerz Racing stables, who was the champion horse in 2024, is no challenge to Dataman.
“We are hoping for some good-weather conditions so we can have a good day (on January 4). Dataman will be back; he has to represent himself,” Mohamed said at the Boxing Day race meet at Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club.
When asked about Dataman not facing his real challenger (Olympic Kremlin), Mohamed replied : “No, no, he has reached the challenge, but he has not reached his prime. I think he is the best in Guyana. I don’t believe Olympic Kremlin is any challenge to him.”
Dataman and Olympic Kremlin raced in the 2025 Guyana Cup, but on a controversial race day, Olympic Kremlin’s jockey was unseated. Since then, he has not been a regular starter, but fans are hoping to see the return of Kremlin and a battle with Dataman.
The New Year’s Day stakes will attract the best horses from the elite racing stables and top jockeys, both local and international; more than $15 million will be up for grabs.
Ten races are carded for the day , and the feature event will be open to all horses. The total purse for the one-mile feature is $3,750,000, and the winner receives $2 million.
The other races on the provisional programme include the Sprint Classic Open, two-year-old imported, three-year-old Guyana-bred Derby, F Class, and three-year-old imported maidens in Guyana, also open to first-time starters, Brazilian-bred horses imported on or before September 2025.
There is also the H2 and Lower open to three-year-old West Indian bred, the L Class non-winners of 2025 and first-time starters, two-year-old Guyana and West Indian-bred open, “I” Class and Lower Open and K Class and Lower.
All purse monies mentioned above are in Guyanese currency. Entries have been accepted from December 21 and will close on December 31, 2025.
Registration for entry is being made only via entry forms, which are available at Port Mourant, Rising Sun, Bush Lot, and Smyth Street, Georgetown.
