Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief executive officer (CEO) Chris Dehring has issued a clarion call for Jamaica to reclaim its place at the heart of West Indies cricket, warning that the region cannot afford to lose one of its strongest pillars.
Speaking to Weekend Nation about Jamaica’s waning relationship with the game, Dehring did not
mince words.
“Jamaica is a problem. I think all Caribbean countries need to recognise that. When you have one of your
major constituents, which has two or three million people, and they don’t even put forward a bid to host matches in a home T20 World Cup (last year), which is the most popular form of the game, you know you
have a problem. That (the size of the population) is half your raw material, whether it’s for a fan base
or cricketers, male and female.”
In a bid to reverse this slide, CWI has ensured that Jamaica will stage more international fixtures, starting with a historic day-night Test match against Australia.
