Holland High School standout Shanoya Douglas says there is much more to come from her even after a spectacular performance at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
Douglas firmly announced herself as one of the country’s top junior sprinters after smashing the national Under-20 200m record with a brilliant 22.36-second clocking in the girls’ Class 1 final yesterday.
The 18-year-old Douglas erased the previous mark of 22.50 set by Briana Williams when she captured the World Under-20 sprint double in 2018.
Alexxe Henry of Edwin Allen High School was a distant second in 23.63, while her teammate Shanique Cassanova took third in 24.17.
Douglas, the World Under-20 200m bronze medallist, had already opened her Champs campaign in style, capturing her first Class 1 100m title in a personal best 10.98 seconds on Wednesday.
“There is definitely a lot more to come from me this year, so just watch and you will see results,” Douglas said after her 200m triumph.
“I am feeling excited and I am really grateful that I am here, and I must give God thanks that I am injury-free through this championships and I was able to deliver in both the 100 and 200 metres.”
The soft-spoken Douglas noted that the record-breaking run was part of her long-term preparation and therefore she was not surprised by the performance.
“I did expect the record in the 200 metres because I have been preparing for this record from last year, so I knew that it was coming, and I am very excited that I delivered it for my coach, my family and teammates,” she said.
She also shared that she was very satisfied with dipping below the 11-second barrier in the 100m.
“I am excited about my sub-11 time because my coach saw it before me, and I am happy that I was able to deliver. I also had a lot of fun doing it as well,” Douglas added.
She pointed out that after months of intense preparation, she is happy with the rewards.
“I have been working very hard from September until now, and it was a great amount of months preparing for these moments, and I am really excited that I was able to deliver.”
