The Head coach of the Grenades FC, Derrick “Pretty Boy” Edwards, has credited his team’s defensive prowess and their ability to execute game plans, for their welcomed one-nil triumph over defending champions All Saints United when the rivals clashed in the Antigua Premier League (APL) on Sunday.
“I think my defense was the deciding factor. We know we have players in teams that you basically have to pay keen attention to and we know the players and who we have to pay attention to, don’t give them enough space to run. When they pick the ball up, they always have two players to contend with and I think the players, they carry out the game plan perfectly well,” he said.
The win, Grenades’ ninth in 11 outings, broke the points deadlock at the top of the standings, pushing the Jennings team to the pinnacle with 29 points, three ahead of United whose loss to Grenades was their first in 11 matches also.
Stanley Province scored the only and winning goal of the contest on Sunday when he struck in minute 54.
However Edwards, speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sports Show, said it was by no means a walk in the park.
“It’s difficult coming up against All Saints. They’re the champion team and coach Schyan, he’s a good coach. I know he prepares his team every weekend to come out and perform so I know it would be difficult. Every team comes out every weekend to beat Grenades and that’s their desire and we can’t blame them for that, but we got to take it one game at a time and the players, they understand the job is not over,” the coach said.
The contest completed the first round of matches for both teams as the competition heads into the crucial second round.
