FORMER Barcelona and Bayern Munich star Mark van Bommel claims he was sounded out about the possibility of replacing Philippe Clement in the Rangers hot seat.
Van Bommel won 79 caps during his illustrious playing career and he’s making waves as a manager too after dramatically leading Antwerp to their first league title in 66 years two seasons back.
They were his third club as manager – in his third different country – after previous spells with PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg.
But he’s been out of work for 12 months after leaving Antwerp at the end of his contract.
And now, in an interview with TalkSPORT, he has revealed talks about replacing Clement as manager of the Ibrox men.
Van Bommel’s first club was Fortuna Sittard, where he was a team-mate of future Gers star Fernando Ricksen.

And the Dutchman said: “Yeah, there were some talks [to become the manager], but not directly to the board of Rangers.”
Instead, the Ibrox club took another direction, with new owners Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises opting to give Russell Martin the job.
The former Southampton boss’s position is a source of intrigue after the club crashed out of Champions League qualifying to Club Brugge 9-1 on aggregate and drew their first four league games.
But the prospect of managing in Glasgow WOULD have appealed to Van Bommel.
He said: “It’s kind of the Dutch team – with a lot of Dutch players and also (Dick) Advocaat.
“I played against them once with PSV.
“The atmosphere is unbelievable.
“The Scottish league for me is a good league, and it’s a challenge to become champion and play in Europe.”
